“WEAVING AN ABSTRACT JOURNEY INTO THE UNDERWORLD THROUGH MORPHING ANGLES AND LINES” Francesca Gavin on POSTmatter.com
ISHTAR is inspired by the journey of the Assyrian goddess into the Underworld. A short film about metamorphosis - a journey from abstraction to beauty, from the wrapping geometries of darkness to grace, pulsing between the violence of change and the ever-radical beauty of morphing angles & lines.
The challenge became finding movement that would convey Ishtar's strong presence and not get lost in the mesh effect. As only the depth of field was visible and tempo had to be ultra slow for the cameras to catch it, we delivered choreography full of diagonals and spirals that displayed the body from different angles. We also directed the dancer to magnify her presence & attitude to make up for the loss of facial expression. All while working with the restriction of less than 2 square metres of shooting space.
